12 Years a Slave (2013 film)

I wanted this to be over so quickly. That’s not to discredit the quality of the filmmaking; if anything, I mean it as a compliment. I went into this expecting an Important Film That Everyone Needs To See, and what I got was an emotionally wrenching experience with some scenes that had me feeling similarly sick as what was conjured in the worst parts of Possession and Perfect Blue. I am never watching this film by myself ever again, and I don’t know if I will ever convince anyone to watch it with me, but I’ll never forget this experience.
