Widows (2018 film)

The most engaging, well-made heist film of its decade, complete with knockout performances from veteran actors and star-making turns from lesser-known names—of course Widows bombed. This is the most mainstream film we’ll ever get from McQueen, if only because his instincts otherwise lead him to odder pastures and, ironically, greater box office returns, but we’re only a step outside the arthouse, one scene borrowing the structure of a music video for an impromptu rap performance and action scenes basically being music videos themselves, owing to Hans Zimmer’s electric score. Green Book won Best Picture during this awards season. Fuck.
