Catherine Hardwicke is too talented of a director to let this be the ABSOLUTE WORST MOVIE EVAH many claim it is, and the actors do their best with the given material, but the fact is there's no presented reason for the central pair to be in love. Okay, he can't read her mind and she saw him stiffarm a Ford, but that's only enough to make them interesting oddities, not paramours. The reel of the key part of the relationship either was left out or never existed in the source material, and you can guess what my money is on.
