Spy (2015 film)

The natural evolution of spy parody away from Austin Powers towards something respectable. The fat jokes get old fast, and it never hits that fifth gear it teases, but this two-hour comedy doesn’t wear itself out by its end, and that’s more than I can say for most two-hour comedies. The arrangement of actors into roles we’d expect others to fill goes over well—turns out Jason Statham is tolerable as comic relief—and there’s always another gag around the corner in case the current one doesn’t land well. Would have been at least an 8 with a stronger climax.
