Part of her wanted to go back. Not all of her, not even some of her, but she’d be lying to herself if she said there wasn’t an urge there. There was perfection to confinement, or at least how her jailor had things running. Her cell smelled of lavender.
She sipped her coffee. She recalled an old quote, from philosopher Bertrand De Jouvenel: “There is a tyranny in the womb of every utopia.” She knew someone, once, who would have earnestly and genuinely pretended to love that quote.
“You’re pretty,” a child blurted to her. She smiled, the expected reaction.
