Seven (1995 film; often stylized as “Se7en” which I will always read as “SeSevenen”)

For the reputation that precedes it, “Seven” is not a particularly violent film, at least in explicit terms—most of the killing occurs off-screen. It’s a testament to the work put in by the filmmakers, director David Fincher in particular, that we’re comfortable considering “Seven” to be a violent film, leaving audiences horrified at, for instance, the Lust victim in spite of never seeing what remains of her. We learn what happened to her the same way we learn all about the detectives, through well-crafted conversations that find the urgency and heart in contemplating what motivates evil actions and people.
