Practical Magic (1998 film)
The 90s was maybe the worst time Practical Magic could’ve been made. Make it earlier and it would’ve had no shame in manically indulging its kitsch tendencies for comedy; make it later and it would be able to better handle its gender dynamics in all regards, including entertainment value. As it is, this is stuck between tones, where serious depictions of violence collide with silly depictions of the law, all held together by whatever charm one finds to mainstream 90s filmmaking, which dooms the thing in my eyes. I’ll say this for it: I liked it more than Hocus Pocus.
